Révolte by Lancome c1936

Révolte by Lancome: launched in 1936. The name means "Uprising" in French, and was originally a perfume for men, but soon, women were taken to wearing it. Reportedly, the name was unpopular in South and Central America as it translated to "anarchy" and "revolution".

It's name was changed to Leather in 1939 as the name Revolt was being used by another company in South America. The perfume was slightly improved, created by Armand Petitjean.

The fragrance was also rebottled into a new bottle.

Ingredients:

So what does it smell like? It is classified as an intense leather perfume with floral notes.
  • Top notes: aldehydes, Calabrian bergamot
  • Middle notes: Grasse rose, French carnation, Parma violet, jasmine
  • Base notes: leather, Virginia tobacco, balsam, Madagascar vanilla, Tibetan musk, ambergris, Yugoslavian oakmoss, Mysore sandalwood

Stay Young, 1936:
"Révolte, by Lancome, is worthy of its elders; a tenacious, fairly complex fragrance reminiscent of scents of leather, and which, as it develops, exhales a very captivating floral note. The bottle corresponds to the originality of the perfume: it is a block of raw rock crystal, in a natural-colored parchment box."

Perfumery and Essential Oil Record - Volume 29, 1938:

"Revolte, "the latest perfume from Lancome, is packed in a square crystal glass bottle; the corners are cut off sharply, adding interest to the hard form by giving an octagonal effect."

Le Petit Parisien: daily evening newspaper, 1941:

"As for Leather, as its name reveals, it enshrines the unexpected success of the strange marriage of flowers with the tawny smell of leather."

A 1945 Lancome perfume catalog describes Leather as:

"Fiery perfume, full of vibrations, dry, which softened by delicate touches, marrying scents of fine skin and flowers with the strange scents of leather. Floral enough in refinement to be a delicious perfume for women, as discreet insinuating as it it takes to rank among the best men's perfumes."
"Fragrant, vibrant, dry, softened by delicate touches, marrying smells of fine skin and flowers with strange scents of leather. Refined pretty flowers to be a delicious perfume for a woman, also discreet, insinuating that it is necessary to take rank among the best perfumes of man."
